The Mayan Riviera
Cancun
and the Mayan Riviera are located on the tip of
the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. Cancun, Mexico
is one of the top vacation destinations in the world as
it basks under year-round warm sun. This beautiful
Mexican resort area offers vacationers water sports
galore, as well dynamic entertainment that goes on until
the wee hours. Add outstanding accommodations, gourmet
restaurants, and terrific shopping, and you've got the
ultimate escape.
The Mayan Riviera is a great base for touring the Mayan
ruins and is the home of Xcaret “little inlet” where
ancient Mayans used to
go to purify themselves in the “cenote” [natural water
well or sink hole]. Xcaret is now an eco-archaeological
park. About 120 km from Cancun is a natural wildlife
park called Xel-Ha. Xel-Ha is a natural aquarium with
what they call “kissing fish”. The fish are so friendly
that they come up and “kiss” you.
Cancun is located in the state of Quintana Roo, which is composed
of many lagoons, sandbars, and mangrove swamps, and is
edged with coral reefs. Several islands lie off shore:
Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox, and Contoy. The
second largest reef in the world, the Belize Reef,
extends from the tip of Isla Mujeres and runs 250 kilometers
south of the
bay of Honduras. Many varieties of coral, including rare
black coral which is found at great depths, grow in the
hills and valleys of the often-deep reef that protects
Quintana Roo.
